Introducing our new personal inquiry project: red knot

It turns out that not only are birds real, they are also among the longest-distance migrants in the animal kingdom. The Red Knot is one such bird - a powerful symbol of freedom, strength and tenacity - dispositions we all need to thrive in today’s ever-changing world.

Motivated by the negative discourse and mis/disinformation around migrants in the during the 2024 U.S. elections, we decided to create an inquiry-based curriculum around migration issues for motivated high school students who are interested in pursuing international humanitarian work and learning more about philanthropy.

Red Knot Scholars

We are starting with a select group of high school students from around the world to engage in an interactive 8-week course (the “9,000-Mile Journey”). After successful completion, students will receive a certificate confirming community service hours and a personalized letter of recommendation to support their college application and professional portfolio.

For those who are unable to commit to an 8-week program, Red Knot will also offer individual coaching packages for high school students who are looking for student-driven, mentor-supported personal inquiry projects. Sign up to get more information.

“Learning about refugee issues was eye-opening! Not only did the experience change the way I think about U.S. policy, it made me more interested in and able to discuss foreign policy work as a potential major in college.“ - Alex French, participant, Roosevelt High School, Washington

“Wow! I learned SO much through this program. Not only did I get to practice facilitating meetings, I understand what it means for refugees to access educational support in and outside of their camps. This program has motivated me and my friends more than any class I’ve taken!” - Ara Traina, participant, Stevenson School, California
